Exceptions (selection)

  • Transport of fresh food: fruit and vegetables, milk and dairy products, meat, fish, eggs, mushrooms, bakery and confectionery products, fresh herbs, ready-to-eat meals – with consignment note or loading list; plus the related empty and return journeys (Abs. 3a).
  • Animals for slaughter, mail, periodicals, supply of drinks in excursion areas (Abs. 3).
  • Urgent repairs to refrigeration, water and energy installations, sewer damage, towing services, breakdown service, disaster operations, road maintenance authorities, refuse collection (Abs. 3).
  • Combined transport within 65 km of the designated railway stations and ports, and journeys to and from airports (Abs. 2a).
  • Journeys within built-up areas on the last two Saturdays before 24 December (Abs. 3).

Full list in StVO 1960 § 42. The night-time driving ban (Abs. 6) has its own exceptions: road maintenance services, essential journeys of the Austrian Armed Forces, low-noise vehicles with confirmation under § 8b Abs. 4 KDV 1967.
